NEW Zoo Welcomes First Spring Baby
The Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo is pleased to announce the birth of a baby Japanese snow macaque! The newborn monkey was discovered by Zookeepers shortly after its birth on Easter morning. First- time mother Hoyo is doing a great job caring for her infant. The sex of the new baby is not yet known as Mom is cuddling it closely.
Father Manny is sticking close to the new mom and baby to offer protection from any perceived threat The new baby is the 3rd offspring for father Manny. Curator of Animals, Carmen Murach says: “Manny is keeping busy telling his rambunctious 2 year olds that they can’t play with their new half sibling just yet!”. Manny came to the NEW Zoo from the Central Park Zoo in New York in 2010 as recommended by the Species Survival Program (SSP) for Japanese macaques. The NEW Zoo partners with other Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) member zoos to ensure genetically healthy and diverse populations of endangered animals.
Japanese macaques are the northern-most dwelling non-human primate. Wild populations are threatened by loss of habitat and increasing conflict with agriculture. Japanese macaques are famous as one of the first non- human species discovered to have a culture. Learned behaviors are passed from one generation to the next.
Senior Zookeeper Jessica Hutjens expects NEW Zoo visitors to enjoy watching the baby monkey grow: “It won’t be long at all before this little monkey is bouncing around the exhibit playing with the other young monkeys, causing trouble and wowing the crowds!”
Although the troop always has access to the privacy of a heated building, Hoyo has been spending the majority of her time on exhibit soaking up the sun and showing off the newest troop member
